Proposed changes to copyright laws will allow owners to move their music, movies and media legally. The Copyright Law of 1988 is 20 years out of date and currently causes lots of confusion. in 2006 the Institute for Public Policy Research, said it was time to overhaul the copyright regulations, so people could legally transfer their CDs and DVDs on to their computers.
A consultation this year that will examine whether format shifting (burning CDs to your PC or mp3 device) should be legalised in the UK is being looked at by the government.
A government-backed report that was issued late in 2006 recommended the decriminalisation of format shifting however it remains illegal in the UK.
Any change in the law could see the practice of burning a legitimately purchased CD or DVD onto a hard disk and then transferred onto an MP3 player made legal.
Though this is technically illegal in the UK at the moment, it is something that many people do.
